The Science and Joy of Anticipation
While we all love celebrations, whether it be a holiday, birthday, or a life-changing event like a new baby, research has shown that the power of anticipation can elicit the same positive emotions as the actual celebration, with the added benefit of helping us live happier lives. Researchers tested the power of anticipation in five different experiments. In each study, participants were asked to contemplate future events, such as a vacation or party, and a past event, like a holiday party or birthday. Scientists discovered that participants’ emotional reactions were more intense when they thought about a future event than when they looked back on the actual celebration. The study helps support the theory that we tend to ascribe greater emotional significance to future events rather than those in the past.
