Technically, though, Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. American Flags
If you have a U.S. flag, you are supposed to fly it at half-staff until noon. Then you raise it to the top of the flag pole. At day’s end, you slowly lower the flag before removing it without letting the flag touch the ground. Many people don’t have a flag pole, however, so they place their flag in a holder on their house. You can also purchase flags to stick directly into the ground in your front yard, which is becoming a more common sight throughout neighborhoods on Memorial Day.
Show Respect
You are allowed to visit cemeteries and place flags and flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes. Don’t forget to pause at 3 p.m. for the National Moment of Remembrance. Many families choose to visit a cemetery together and then spend the rest of the day enjoying each other’s company.
BBQ with Family and Friends
If you are going to someone’s house for a barbecue, it’s a nice gesture to thank your host properly with words of kindness and a little gift.
