Ideas for Honoring & Celebrating Memorial Day this Year

Make this year’s Memorial Day weekend special by enjoying get-togethers with family and friends without letting the true meaning of the holiday get lost in the shuffle. Memorial Day weekend is typically considered the unofficial start to summer, and many Americans spend their three-day weekend celebrating a new season.

Technically, though, Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. This year Memorial Day falls on May 27. If you’re proud to be an American and want to observe Memorial Day while still having fun, here are a few ideas.

American Flags

If you have a U.S. flag, you are supposed to fly it at half-staff until noon. Then you raise it to the top of the flag pole. At day’s end, you slowly lower the flag before removing it without letting the flag touch the ground. Many people don’t have a flag pole, however, so they place their flag in a holder on their house. You can also purchase flags to stick directly into the ground in your front yard, which is becoming a more common sight throughout neighborhoods on Memorial Day.

Show Respect

You are allowed to visit cemeteries and place flags and flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes. Don’t forget to pause at 3 p.m. for the National Moment of Remembrance. Many families choose to visit a cemetery together and then spend the rest of the day enjoying each other’s company.

BBQ with Family and Friends

If you are going to someone’s house for a barbecue, it’s a nice gesture to thank your host properly with words of kindness and a little gift. Thank you gifts are always appreciated, and can include anything from baked treats placed on a plate with the words “thank you” inscribed on it to a sweet angel figure with a thoughtful sentiment written on her dress.

Host a Gathering

If you decide to host, let your group of friends and family bring a BBQ potluck item to share. It’s a great day for grilled hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken, corn on the cob, potato salad, watermelon, and patriotic-colored desserts. If you have patriotic serveware or platters, Memorial Day is an appropriate time to use them. Consider thank you gift ideas to give your guests, such as a flag magnet or a remembrance poppy, which symbolizes the sacrifices our service men and women have made for our country.

Never Forget

Remember that Memorial Day is a dedicated day to remember those who died for our freedoms. It’s also a day for many Americans to gather with family and friends and celebrate the beginning of summer. There’s room for both types of celebrating as long as it’s all done with respect.
