Six Occasions to Give a Thoughtful Gift

Gift-giving is a way to show someone you care about them and can also be a response to the care someone has shown you. Gifts are a lovely way to express gratitude or celebrate a special occasion. And there’s never really a wrong time to give a gift. If you’re genuinely thinking about the recipient, gift-giving should come from the heart and not out of obligation. That said, we all could use some gifting inspiration from time to time. In the spirit of giving, let’s take a look at six occasions or situations where a gift would certainly be appreciated.

Wedding Gifts

If you received an invitation to a wedding this summer, it’s customary to buy a gift for the bride and groom. A wedding gift isn’t mandatory, but it’s a nice gesture to give a thoughtful gift if you were invited to the wedding. What you buy depends on how close you are to them. If you don’t know what to get the couple, find out if they have a registry. Or, shop somewhere that specializes in highly giftable wedding presents for the happy couple.

Host Gifts

It depends on the situation, but it’s always a nice, traditional gesture to bring small thank you gifts to the hosts of a party as a way of saying thank you. If you do get a gift, think about what they might like in their home for entertaining. It could be a tray, a platter, a tea towel, or something else for their kitchen.

Graduation Gifts

It’s the season of high school and college graduations, so you’ve probably received a few announcements in the mail. It’s an exciting time for the graduate and their family. While you certainly aren’t required to buy a graduation gift, the recipient certainly would appreciate a meaningful or commemorative gift to celebrate the day. A card is always appreciated whether you give a gift or not and is an excellent way to show your support and congratulate the new grad.

Thank You Gifts

If someone goes above and beyond to do something for you personally or helps your child at school, show your gratitude with a little gift. Sometimes you just want to thank someone for being sweet to you and words can’t quite convey your appreciation. Some thank you gift ideas include “thank you” dessert plates, a “gratitude” dish, or any kind of dishware that has a positive or inspirational message on it.

Baby Shower Gifts

If you attend a baby shower, you’ll be expected to bring a gift. New moms and dads need a lot of items for a new baby. Whether you are contributing to a group gift or buying a personal gift for a newborn, think about what the baby will need during their first year of life, including bibs, swaddles, clothes, and lots (and lots) of diapers.

Just Because” Gifts

Getting a gift from someone out of the blue is a special feeling because it’s unexpected and it’s nice to be reminded that person was thinking of you. When is the last time you sent a long-distance friend a gift in the mail? Or surprised your spouse with a special token of love? Consider gifting a thoughtful sculptural figure, piece of wall art, or a practical gift for the home you know they’d love.
